Visible Evidence XXVIII

Visible Evidence is the most important global documentary film studies network and a series of conferences and publications.  Set up some 30 years ago by the then young American scholar Michael Renov (the University of Southern California)  together with a group of other scholars (Jane Gaines , Bill Nicholls and Brian Winston and others) this network aimed at offering a transdisciplinary approach into the field of documentary film studies research.  The network and the conferences aspired to moving the discourse of the documentary film from a simple conversation about recording reality to a profound philosophical reflection about historical, ethical and philosophical implications of the documentary film studies discipline.  At the time it did indeed constitute a major intervention and a disruption into the traditional field of the documentary film studies.

The network which has grown from strength to strength over the decades has held conferences all over the globe during the last 30 years, in places such diverse as California ,Lancaster, New York, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Stockholm and many others.

This year, for the first time ever in the history of the network, the conference is coming to a university (and a city) in the former Eastern Europe, to the University of Gdansk, under the auspices of the Andrzej Wajda Film Centre, at the Faculty of the Humanities (‘Neofilologie).

Directors

Mirosław Przylipiak is a Professor of Flm and Media studies at the University of Gdańsk. He is the Associate Dean for Research and International Affairs at the Faculty of Languages and the Director of the Andrzej Wajda Film Centre. His main publications include the four books on documentary cinema and about 160 academic papers on various aspects of film and media. He also made several documentary films and series of television educational programmes. His main areas of interest are: theory and aesthetics of cinema, documentary film, American direct cinema, and Polish cinema. In the 90’s he was one of the first Polish recipients of the Fulbright scholarship to carry out research in film studies at Harvard, USA.

Agnieszka Piotrowska, PhD, is a Professor of Film and Cultural Studies at the University of Gdansk, Poland, and a professorial fellow at Oxford Brookes, UK. She is the former Head of School for Film at the University for the Creative Arts, UK, and an award-winning filmmaker and theorist, best known for her film Married to the Eiffel Tower and more recent work in Zimbabwe. Her book Psychoanalysis and Ethics in Documentary Film (2014) has been called ‘pathfinding’ by Michael Renov. Her latest book Creative Practice Research in the Age of Neoliberal Hopelessness (2020) redefines creative practice as a political gesture. Piotrowska has written extensively about film, gender and psychoanalysis and was the finalist in the Times Higher Competition in 2018 in the category of the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts.

Events

The Organisers believe that there is no better way of generating ideas than having scholarly discussions over a glass of wine.  Networking will be a big thing at our conference and we look forward to welcoming you to various receptions and events.

At the end of the first day of the conference there will be a Welcome Reception so that you can begin to network with other delegates.

On Friday 12 August at 5pm all conference delegates will meet at the famous European Solidarity Centre for a tour of the award winning exhibition, featuring documentary footage and archive material from the contemporary history of Poland leading to the events of August 1980, the strike at the Gdansk Shipyard.

This will be followed by a screening of the classic documentary about the events Robotnicy 80 (Workers 80) and a panel discussion led by Professor Miroslaw Przylipiak, a leading historian of documentary film in Poland and the Joint Director of the Visible Evidence conference.

We will then have a reception at the Centre during which we will be able to meet the participants of the August events.
